The Coral Lighting Collection
An Exploration in Combining Motion Graphics with Industrial Design
What you're seeing in these designs is a moment frozen in time. Using computational design algorithms that mimic growth patterns found in nature, each light fixture is a freeze-frame of a 3D animation, which is then 3D printed. I wanted to create something that looked otherworldly. I knew that the only way to achieve this was to do something that was a radical departure from traditional industrial design processes and tools.
The lighting collection is my way of paying tribute to the beauty of the ocean. As a veteran surfer, I've experienced the power and beauty of the ocean while enjoying each wave as its own unique moment in time. One of many magical living structures in our great oceans is coral. With a diverse range of color, shape, and scale, coral is an entire ecosystem of thriving life. My lighting celebrates this life, illuminated by light waves, much like the ocean comes alive through tidal waves. I am proud to offer our unique collection inspired by the majesty and mystery of our ever-changing oceans. These lamps are meant to capture the hypnotic feeling of peering out into our seas and admiring aquatic life.
In an effort to reduce waste and curb carbon emissions, all lamps are 3D printed in the USA, using processes that allow for recycling of any waste material in the manufacturing process. The ocean is effectively infinite in its size, scope, and beauty, but not in its capacity to weather humanity’s destructive habits. For that reason, 50% of all profits from The Coral Lighting Collection go to Coral Reef Conservation Funds.
Development Work
Hundreds of iterations were designed. Dozens of materials were tested. Three designs made it to production.
